Cakes are basically divided into sweet and savory ones. Sweet cakes are the most festive dessert. No celebration is complete without a birthday cake. The wedding cake is then considered literally a master baking discipline.

The dough for the cake base is usually baked in whole in cake forms of various shapes. After baking, the dough is cut into slices. These slices are then most often glued together with jam or cream to achieve the layered appearance of the cake base. There are a large number of types of cake doughs, from sponge and egg white to non-traditional carrot and no-bake cake doughs.

The surface of the cake is another aspect of the basic division. There are naked cakes, coated, topped or decorated with fruit, chocolate, caramel and other ingredients.
