Apple grid - a recipe from my grandmother

In our house, this is a traditional cake. Sometimes I make it without a grid on top (when I don't feel like forming a grid from the dough - in that case I roll out the dough in a classic way - the bottom and middle part and it's done much faster). If I want to play around with it to make the cake look better, I shape the grid. The taste of this cake is fantastic, if you use sour apples, the resulting taste will be refreshing. It depends on your taste - if you like sweeter cakes, but you have sour apples, add more sugar.

Ingredients

Dough:

5 cups
flour
10 oz
butter
1 ⅔ cups
powdered sugar
2 pcs
egg
2 ½ tsp
baking powder

Filling:

1 lb
apples
¾ cup
granulated sugar
2 packs
cinnamon sugar

  1. Make a smooth dough from flour, butter, powdered sugar, eggs and baking powder and let it rest aside for about 30 minutes.
  2. Peel the apples, grate them, add sugar and cinnamon sugar.
  3. Divide the dough into 3 parts (one can be smaller). Grease a deep baking sheet and sprinkle with flour.
  4. Roll out the dough on a floured rolling pin and transfer it to the baking sheet using a rolling pin. Sprinkle the dough with a little breadcrumbs and add half of the apples.
  5. Roll out the second dough and put it on the apples. Again, sprinkle the dough with breadcrumbs and add the remaining apples.
  6. Make a grid out of the third dough and let it bake. I bake at a temperature of 355 °F / 180 °C for about 40 minutes.
  7. You can also sprinkle the cake with powdered sugar when it is baked.
